The Case of the Disappearing Pets (Mina Mistry Investigates #2)

Wr. Angie Lake Ill. Ellie O'Shea

Pub. Sweet Cherry

Age Range - 7-9 years

Pets. Mina doesn’t have any. This is super inconvenient when it’s Showcase Your Pets week at school. Unfortunately, Mina’s best friend Holly doesn’t have any pets either now that her hamster’s gone missing. And has anyone seen Danny’s pet toad?

An explosion at the local pet shop shows Mina that this pet palaver can’t be a coincidence. But why is someone stealing all the animals? What do they want them for?

"the perfect alternative to books by David Walliams"

Mina's second adventure is just as funny - if not funnier - than her first. Told once again from the POV of a protagonist whose age is presumed to be around 8 or 9. As with The Case of the Disgusting School Dinners (Mina Mistry Investigates #1), the book uses an abundance of illustrations and eye-popping fonts to bring the story to life. Mina continues to be exasperated by her friend Holly -

What normal person has an outfit to wear to funerals, but doesn't have a single item of clothing suitable for crawling around in the mud?

- and is once again on the scent of a mystery, this time concerning missing pets. Young readers will no doubt love trying to solve the case before Mina is able to, and there are just enough little twists and turns to keep them engaged. Everything I liked about Book #1 is here, from the witty asides to the reader, to Ellie O'Shea's fantastic illustrations. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - if you enjoy reading Walliams, I heartily recommend you read Mina Mistry Investigates (instead).

Chocolate Milk, X-Ray Specs & Me

(wr. Wr. Bethany Walker, ill. Jack Noel)

The book is constructed entirely out of letters, postcards and newspaper headlines, which is a clever way to unfold a story in which characters can't interact in person. It is also very funny.
